If you are anywhere near BookTok you know that everyone seems to have a Kindle reader. It is so easy to get lost in all the TikToks of Kindle unboxing and decorating. Then there are the ones where they have MULTIPLE Kindles. You begin to feel left out and want to join the group. My Kindle is what helped me get back into reading.
When I started thinking about getting a Kindle I was worried it wouldn’t be worth the cost. I had recently started getting back into reading after college. The idea of reading on a screen some more sounded horrible. I have always been an avid physical book reader and I wanted to keep it that way, or so I thought.
Last Christmas, I flew to Indiana to visit my family. I was dumb enough to not bring a book. I mostly read library books so I was scared something would happen to it. Instead, I ended up sitting in the airport trying to download a book to read on my iPad before it was time to board. I spent the whole trip reading my ebook. Then when I got home, I found myself reading another.
I loved how convenient it was to read this way but the screen was hurting my eyes. And holding an iPad for that long is not comfortable. So on an impulse I gave in and got a Kindle Paperwhite. Let me tell you, I haven’t regretted it since.
Here are 4 reasons why you need a Kindle reader
The convenient size
This was the first thing I fell in love with. The Kindle is bigger than a phone but smaller than an iPad. Really, it is the size of a book. It is so easy to hold. And it weighs nothing!
When I first picked it up I was shocked at how easy it was to hold. On top of that, it fits so well in a purse making it easy to take anywhere. Since getting it I have added a case and Popsocket to make it so I am not physically holding it as much. It is so much easier to hold than a book and I’m not likely to drop it on my face when laying in bed.
One of the differences between the Kindle versions is the slight variations in size. Some Kindle models, like the Oasis, have ergonomic holders and buttons. I recommended going to a store and holding the display models so you can get a feel for each model and find the one best for you.
It’s easy to read on
Kindles are built with special eink. When everyone said it’s like reading a book I was skeptical. While I wouldn’t say it is exactly like reading a book, it is definitely nowhere close to reading on a screen. I could read on this for hours and never get a headache.
The Kindle also has great features that let you adjust the font, size, and light balance. I love being able to change these based on my level of tiredness or time of day. As well as, antiglare which sounds fake. But unless you are sitting directly under the sun, there is no screen glare like other devices. This is the biggest reason why it feels like reading a book.
You end up reading so much more on the Kindle
A lot of people say that they read faster on Kindles, which I have experienced. I think there are many reasons for this. We are *slightly* addicted to being on electronics like our phones. I noticed my brain is tricked into thinking I am on my phone when holding my Kindle. Therefore, I am more likely to stare at it for longer periods of time without getting distracted.
You also don’t skip around when reading on a Kindle like you would with a book. Kindle shows you one page at a time, so you can’t easily look the page over or flip through the book to see what is going to happen next. It keeps you focused on what is currently happening in the book.
There is a built-in dictionary and translator
This was a tool I did not think I was going to use. But it is so convenient to just click on the word and have the definition pop up. Also, it comes with a built-in translator. This has been handy when reading my romance books, especially the popular ones set in Italy. Authors seem to forget we don’t all speak a foreign language and add long phrases. With the translating tool, I just have to highlight the passage and it translates it for me.
So why did I choose the Paperwhite as my Kindle reader?
I have the Kindle Paperwhite and I love it. I originally wanted the most basic Kindle for its size since it is slightly smaller. However, I got the Paperwhite since it is waterproof. Since I read in the bath or next to pools I figured it would be a safer option for me to get.
Investing in a Kindle reader is something I don’t regret. It is so much easier to take places and read on. I also love using the Libby app to check out books from the library. There is often less of a wait time for popular books compared to physical copies. If you are worried about cost, Amazon often has sales for Prime Day and around the holidays. Kindles also last a long time so you can buy a used or refurbished one and know it will still last.
I highly recommend getting a Kindle especially if you are someone who reads on their phone or iPad.
