So many of us spend hours scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram looking at all the perfect bedroom aesthetics. One thing that always sticks out is the luxurious beds. If you ever spend a night in a nice hotel, then you know how amazing those beds feel at the end of the day.
For years I hated how my bed never looked aesthetically pleasing. I thought it was just because I was throwing random pillows and blankets on my bed. So I started buying nice duvet covers and expensive pillows to try and make my bed look amazing. That is when I started researching all the ways to make my bed have that amazing hotel look.
Now it is your turn to learn how to make your bed have that same aesthetically pleasing look. It is easy to do and you do not need to spend a fortune making it happen.
Here are the secrets you need to know to make your bed look luxurious.
What you need to make your bed:
A comforter
When it comes to comforters, there are two options. Your first option is to spend the money and get that nice, oversized comforter that you just want to jump into. Because these can always be expensive, I recommend looking at Marshalls and T.J. Maxx. They usually have great deals on nice comforters. My secret is to not worry so much about pattern or color, and focus on quality. You can always throw a duvet cover on top.
Your second option is to use a comforter you already have and get a duvet cover that is a size too small. This will give the illusion of a big, luscious comforter because it is squished into a too small space. This is a great option if you don’t want to spend a lot of money. Or if you are like me, and want the option to change out your blankets based on time of year.
A textured quilt
This may seem like too many blankets, but it will soon make sense. But it is super important that you get a quilt that is textured. By getting something that is textured, you are giving the eye more to look at. It will help break up all the bedding and give a more ‘exciting’ look. My textured quilt is from Target, but Marshall’s and T.J. Maxx are also great places to look.
Make sure you don’t get a quilt that is too overtextured. While traditional quilt designs make look beautiful, they will make your bed look too busy. Try to get a simple pattern. Such as verticle or horizontal stripes. You also want your quilt to be a solid color. Simpler is better when it comes to base layers.
Tip: if you want your duvet to have a pattern, make sure you match that with your quilt. A good example is a large duvet pattern with a smaller quilt pattern. Just make sure you are not overdoing the patterns and it is relaxing to look at.
Pillows
Pillows are going to be one of your important pieces. You want several to make your need look comfy, but you don’t want to overdo it. I recommend having two or three layers of pillows (counting your sleep pillows).
Have different types of pillows. I like to start with large pillows and slowly make the next layer of pillows smaller. Don’t be afraid to add different textures, shapes, and colors to give the eye something to look at. Like the duvet covers, you can switch out your pillowcases based on your mood or season. The square pillows on my bed are actually blue throw pillows from Marshall’s that I put covers on. I also recently bought these pillow interests for my couch so I can switch out the covers each season.
When it comes to pillow colors, I like to have my sleeping pillows match my sheets. Then my secondary pillows will match my duvet. Any other throw or accent pillows I match to my room or bedding theme. Usually these pillows I will make a pop of color to add something fun to look at. Don’t be afraid to experiment when it comes to pillows!
Throw Blanket
Yes, more blankets! I love a good blanket and will always have as many as possible on my bed. Honestly, I believe throw blankets make any home look cozy. They are extra fun because you can buy a seasonal one, make your own, or get a nice quality one that goes will everything. This is where you can add your ‘spice’ to the bed. Get something fun that speaks to you.
Throw blankets are usually cheap and the easiest thing to switch out when it comes to bedding. It is also fun to match your accent pillows to your throw blankets. These knitted throw blankets are a great option for adding texture to your bed.
How to Make It
This is where the important part comes in, how to make your bed. But it is easier than you think!
Base Blankets
First, you are going to choose if you want your quilt or comforter to be your base. I switch these out depending on the seasons and how warm I need to be. You are going to take your base and lay it across 2/3rds of your bed. Just leave a small section at the top.
Then you are going to take your blanket and fold the top over twice. Make sure when folding over you only fold half what you normally would. That way you still have plenty of blanket when you fold the second time. By folding the blanket over twice, you get a fluffier look to the bedding.
Your Second Layer
Now whatever base you did not use, you are going to layer on top of the first base.
Take this piece at place it so it covers the top 2/3rds of your first base layer. You might need to fold it in half or thirds to make sure it doesn’t cover the whole base layer. Make sure you can see the layers from the top. Also have a small part of the base layer peeking out from the bottom. But you are not going to fold over this piece.
Just think of the piece like folding a smaller blanket and laying it on the edge of your bed.
Placing Your Pillows
Start with your sleeping pillows. You can lay them straight down on the bed or you can stitch them standing up. The goal for these pillows is to give a base that makes the rest of your pillows stand upright looking fluffy. If you have extra throw blankets, I like to fold them and stuff them behind my pillows. It helps them stand better and give a fuller look.
Then start placing your pillows in rows, going from largest to smallest. Try centering your pillows from the previous row. Don’t be afraid to play around with placement and sizing. You can end your pillows with a small accent pillow. I like to place this last pillow slightly on the blanket to give an overfilled look.
Tip: You want to get your pillows touching the edge of your folded blanket. Move pillows around or even try refolding your blanket to make sure they touch.
Final Touch, the Throw Blanket
You can tell by looking at any aesthetically pleasing bedding photo, the goal is to make the throw blanket look good by having it literally thrown on the bed. But there is a little secret to achieving this look and it does not involve throwing the blanket.
Place the blanket at the edge of the bed where you want it to lay. Then start scrunching the blanket into itself. It is that easy! You can play around with making the scrunched uneven or running your hand throw some of the folds to make it look more natural. Now you have the perfect ‘throw’ look.
I also recommend making sure you can see a little of the based bedding at the foot of the bed. This makes the bed have a natural flow and not look like you layered blankets on top of blankets.
It is super easy to make your bed look luxurious.
Having an amazing looking bed makes you want to crawl into it all the time. It also makes your bedroom look put together. Now you have all the secrets to making sure your bed has that aesthetically pleasing look!

I don’t make my bed. But then again I don’t have a comforter or big blanket for my king sized bed. It’s just me. I use a weighted blanket and a fuzzy blanket as my covers. I like it bc it works for me. I have arthritis and the weighted blanket it helps me sleep without being so restless.
