When I first moved out into my own place I had all these plans to decorate my home. My Instagram had so many saved posts that were my inspiration. But then I started shopping and realized that decorating my home wasn’t cheap.
So I decided I was happy with how my home was. I didn’t need a Pinterest style home. But I wasn’t happy in my space.
Instead of being unhappy, I decided to find ways to make my home aesthetically pleasing without spending a ton of money. I started researching easy living room decor ideas to find inspiration. And I learned it was easier than I thought. I was just looking in the wrong places for my inspiration.
Here are living room decor ideas that won’t cost a ton
Add fake flowers around the room
This is my number one tip for decorating your living room.
Plants bring so much life to a room. However, there are several reasons you might not be able to have real plants such as pets or allergies. Or the room might be too dark to keep anything alive. And cut flowers can just be expensive over time.
Fake flowers are a great affordable way to add plants to your room. The best part of fake flowers is that you can reuse them.
There are several places to get fake flowers. Thrift stores often have lots of options that you can use to make your own arrangements. My favorite place is Joann’s Craft Store. It is so easy to find flowers for only a couple of dollars. Or you can get fake flower arrangements that don’t need any prep work.
There are also so many places you can put them, such as your coffee table, side tables, bookshelves, or even your TV stand.
Use wall art printables from Esty
Wall art can add up. One hack I found for this was to shop thrift stores for used art. You would be surprised at what people give away. But even that can add up with thrift stores starting to charge more.
This is why I love Etsy. It can be easy and affordable to find art for your home. And you are supporting a local artist.
Some of my favorite wall art printables from Etsy:
- Vintage Wall Art
- Botanical Prints
- Neutral Watercolor Wildflower
- Watercolor Botanical Prints
- Botanical Line Art
Coffee table books from the thrift store
Coffee tables can be hard to decorate because you want them to look pretty without looking cluttered. For years I wondered how people were able to decorate their coffee tables with books. Most coffee table books are $40-$50 for a book you probably will never look at.
That is why thrift stores are a great place to look for coffee books. You can easily find a book for your coffee table that is less than $5. When looking don’t focus so much on what the book is about, just focus on if it fits the aesthetic you want.
Another great place to work is used book sales. Most local libraries have a yearly book sale where you kind find hundreds of used books. It was where I got several of my books for my living room and kitchen decor.
But the real secret is that most of these books aren’t real. There are so many options for fake books out there to decorate your home with. And they cost so much less! Amazon has several great options for decorating your home:
- This decorative book stack is great for more aesthetic homes. It comes with blank pages that could be used for notes or visitor journals.
- These fake books with storage are great for hiding small things like remotes or costers.
Create a classic picture wall
Picture walls are a home decor go-to. But it can be hard to create a beautiful wall that doesn’t look like your parent’s home.
Start with a theme. This is the most important part of making sure your picture wall doesn’t look chaotic.
Choose frames that go together or pictures that look similar. If you are stuck, black and white pictures are a great way to make a beautiful home aesthetic.
Frames can be overwhelming and expensive. That is why thrift stores or places like Marshalls are great for finding picture frames. When choosing frames there are several ways you can do it. My favorite is the classic 3 by 3 above bends or couches. Another great option is the walls that have various sizes and frames, a great option for thrift store finds.
Amazon also has several great frame options. These frames come in multiple colors and are a great deal for 3 of them.
Add pretty baskets
Baskets are a great way to decorate your home. And they are amazing at hiding clutter.
My favorite way to use baskets is in the living room with blankets. It is a great way to have lots of blankets accessible without having them all over your couch.
Baskets are also the easiest things to find at thrift stores. Several of the ones around my house are from Goodwill and only cost me a few dollars.
Change out your pillow covers
Pillows add so much to your home, they make your home cozy and welcoming. Pillows are also a great way to change decor for the seasons. But throw pillows can get expensive and are hard to store when you own multiple.
That is why you should consider getting pillow inserts. I bought these inserts around Christmas time when I didn’t want to spend the $20 for one pillow that I would only use once. They are great quality and I have had issues with them becoming smooshed.
Then I purchase pillow covers for each season or if I want to switch up my home decor.
You also don’t need to buy inserts if you already have pillows. I purchased pillows from Marshalls during the summer but didn’t like them for my fall aesthetic. So I bought these pillow covers and placed them over the pillows I already had.
Place some mirrors around
Mirrors make your home look bigger and add a put-together feel to your room.
There are so many ways to add mirrors to your home. One way is to put them above your entryway table. A round mirror looks amazing with flowers or other small decor items. It also helps when you are running out the door,
Full-length mirrors are great for bedrooms or stair landings. I love to place them where I might naturally walk by and look at what I am wearing.
Mirrors also don’t need to be expensive. I have found several beautiful mirrors at thrift stores. Or you can buy these cool mirror tiles to make a fun mirror wall.
There are so many easy living room decor ideas
You just need to look in the right places. Don’t worry about buying the mirror everyone else has. chances are that you can find it for cheaper and no one will know it isn’t the ‘real’ thing. Your home should be focused on making you happy because you are always then one in it.

I find changing up the throw pillows and adding wall decor makes a huge difference. My living room is pretty basic at the moment. The dog uses my couch more than I do.
