When I started following BookTok, Colleen Hoover was at the height of what everyone was reading. I didn’t know who she was but I knew everyone was reading It Ends With Us. But of course, her reign on BookTok did not last long and soon everyone was hating her.
While I agree there are some problematic parts to her books, I also know lots of authors write problematic things. There are so many morally grey books out there that people love.
Plus even if someone doesn’t think she is a great writer, doesn’t mean another person will agree. I can honestly say I am a part of the reader group that Colleen Hoover helped get back into reading. Her books are quick and easy reads. Plus they are a few of the books that make me feel something.
If you are on the fence about trying one of her books, here are the 5 best Colleen Hoover books that I love.
Here are the best Colleen Hoover books
Reminders of Him
Reminders of Him was the first Colleen Hoover book I read. It also has been my favorite.
The book follows Kennea Rowan who just finished a five-year prison sentence. She hopes to return to the town where everything went wrong and reunite with her four year old daughter. But of course, everyone shuts her out because of the mistake she made, even the family who now has her daughter. Along the way she meets Legard Ward who is an important person in her daughter’s life. Kennea tries to prove to Legard she is not what everyone thinks, while Legard has to decide if he can risk everything to trust her.
This book made me sob. There are few books that make me cry, but something about this book got to me. It is such a great story about second chances at life and morally grey characters. It is also a great book that speaks to the challenges prisoners face after being released. This is a great book if you want to feel all the feelings.
Too Late
Too Late is a thriller romance, two of my favorite genres. I was excited to read this and loved it so much that I now own a copy.
Sloan is a college student who will do anything for the people she loves, even if that means putting herself in harm’s way. Part of that harm includes drug trafficker and boyfriend Asa. Sloan is stuck with Asa all because he pays for her brother’s care. However, Asa does not see it that way. At the same time, DEA agent Carter is working undercover as a college student, and one of Asa’s men. Sloan and Carter instantly form a connection that could get both of them hurt if anyone found out.
I read this book in a day. It is such a great thrilled and doesn’t feel like a typical Colleen Hoover book. This is a great book if you like secret romances with a little bit of crime.
Heartbones
Heartbones is another book that made me cry. So much happened in this book that when I put it down I was in shock.
After Beyah’s mother dies, she is left to spend her last two months before college with a father she doesn’t know. Her summer plans are to just get through it before school starts. That is until she meets her neighbor, Samson. Samson comes from a life that is the opposite of hers, his is full of money and privilege. The two have an instant connection and agree to a fun summer fling. But the summer end comes with more than Beyah can handle.
This book started out as such a fun summer read. But by the end, I was crying. This book is a perfect opposite attract read that will make you feel all the things.
November 9
I will be honest, I always forget that I have read November 9. But once I remember it I begin to remember how much I love it.
Fallon comes from a well-known family, including herself. But after a tragic accident, she decides to leave L.A. and start over. But on her last day she meets Ben, an inspiring author. They then decided to meet once a year to make sure they are reaching their goals. Eventually Fallon begins to question if Ben is telling her the truth.
This book made me feel for the characters. There was such growth over the years of following them. It also drove me a bit crazy to watch so many opportunities between the two. So much could have been solved with communication, but because of their rule to only talk once a year it lasted longer. I found myself yelling “go after her!” so many times.
This is a great book if you love slow burns and missed opportunities.
Ugly Love
Ugly Love is another Colleen Hoover book I think a lot about. So much that I eventually gave in and bought it.
Tate meets next door pilot Miles, who also happens to be her brother’s friend. While the two don’t get along, both agree there is a mutual attraction. Together they decide to start a friends with benefits relationship. This works as long as Tate agrees to follow Miles’ two rules: don’t ask about the past and don’t expect a future. Things seem to work until they don’t.
I almost did not put this book on the list because I have a love/hate relationship with it. Colleen Hoover is known for romanticizing toxic relationships, and this is definitely one of them. This story is full of lies and secrets. It felt like I was reading a book about high school drama and not two adults. This book is also one of Hoover’s spicer books.
While the book drove me crazy and I wanted to shake the two, it is still a book I think about a lot. And one I want to reread.
This is a great book if you like enemies to lovers, brother’s friend, and secrets.
Finding the best Colleen Hoover books was a bit challenging
There are several still on my list to read. Currently, Hopeless is on my TBR for May. These books are great for a fun and quick read. What I love most about her books is that I can easily relate to the characters and feel so much more about their story.
