Hobbies are something I am trying to find in 2024. And one of my favorite things to do is read. I was a reader growing up, but once I hit college there was never any time to read. Now that I am graduated I find myself reading all the time.
This month I read a total of 6 books. This is the most I have read in YEARS. Most of the books I read this month are library holds that finally came in (all at once of course). There are dozens of reviews on BookTok but I wanted to share my own. So I decided to write my own January 2024 book reviews, even though I am definitely not a book reviewer.
Here are my January 2024 Book Reviews.
Wildfire by Hannah Grace
Icebreaker was one of the first BookTok recommendations that I read and loved. So when I saw Wildfire was coming out, I was excited to read it. But honestly, it wasn’t as good as I hoped. I struggled to get through it and almost didn’t finish it.
The book is about Aurora and Russ who end up having a one-night stand at a college party. While this was supposed to be a one-night thing, they soon find out they are camp counselors at the same summer camp. Russ is a rule follower, while Auroar likes to break all the rules. Like the rule of no staff fraternizing.
This book was slow in leading up to all the storylines. And because they worked at a camp, most of it was about the same daily activities. This book is good if you like a cute romcom, but it is nothing like Icebreaker.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
This is a book I told myself I wasn’t going to read. I haven’t read a fantasy book since high school. Even when I did, I never picked up a book about dragons. But this book is definitely worth the hype.
The book is about Violet, who is forced by her own mother to join one of the deadliest Quadrants. The dragon riders. Everyone around her is waiting for the moment she fails. Especially Xaden. While trying to prove she isn’t as fragile as everyone thinks, she is also learning that their kingdom is not as strong as they think.
This book moves fast and has the perfect amount of romance sprinkled about. Usually I am good at predicting what happens next, but this book was always shocking me.
Counting the Cost by Jill Duggar
I grew up watching the Duggar’s and a part of their beliefs were things my own family tried to implement. Jill was never the one I expected to walk away from it all. This book is about her story growing up, and how she began to see the negative side of her upbringing. It also spoke of her family’s reaction to her choices.
What I loved most about this book was Jill’s honesty in the help she got. She speaks a lot about therapy and how she tried to mend relationships. It is a great example of loving someone but setting boundaries for your own safety.
A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
This is the second book in the ACOTAR series. I picked up this series unsure what to think about it. I have never read fae books before this. But this series had captivated by from the start.
Book two is about Fayre’s new life as a High Fae. Her previous journey of Under the Mountain had left her haunted. Now her marriage to Tamilin is struggling and not at all what she thought it would be. And she is still required to participate in the deal she made with Rhysand. She now navigates a complex web of feelings, politics, and her own nightmares.
Everyone says that getting through the first book of this series is the worst part. While I loved the first book, the second book is so much better. If you a starting to read the ACOTAR series and don’t love it, wait until the second book.
Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan
This was a book I put on hold without even knowing what it was about. Everyone talked about how good it was and made them cry. The cover looked cute and I was in the mood for a sad book. This just wasn’t it.
The book is about Bree who is running away from her own life. After a tragedy that broke her world, she runs off to the one place where she always felt happy. There she meets Archer, the one person in town no one talks to. But Archer is dealing with his own tragedy in life and doesn’t want to let himself trust another individual.
This book is sweet and has its sad moments, but it was not the tearjerker I was hoping for. This book almost reminded me of a YA book in how it was written. While the book didn’t give me what I wanted, it was still a great read.
Twisted Games by Ana Huang
If you love the Princess Diary movies, then you will love this book. It is an adult romance version of the movies we grew up watching.
Bridget is a stubborn princess who has no interest in being a part of the royal crown. But her desire for freedom is no longer important when her brother abdicates making her next in line. Rhys is her new bodyguard that ruins everything fun. With his own dark past, his only goal is to keep the princess safe. But they are both secretly attracted to each other. Something that cannot happen.
The book is the second in the series, but each can be read as a standalone. After reading this book, I want to read all the princess romance books. It was such a change from other romance books.
Those are my January 2024 book reviews.
Hopefully, you found a book that you are now interested in reading. I love having time to read again and it feels like my TBR is always growing. If you want to keep up with what I am reading, follow me on Goodreads! Or leave a comment of what book I should add to TBR.
Lovingly, Lex
